Diversity in the newsroom facilitates balanced and nuanced reporting. Global Press Institute (GPI) trains and employs underserved and underrepresented women from developing communities to become professional journalists. They provide a ground-up perspective to news stories in their communities and context to global issues. Their stories are published at Global Press Journal and distributed via Global Press News Service to syndication partners that include the BBC and Reuters. In this way, GPI serves a purpose beyond income generation for its journalists. With its stories from underserved and underrepresented communities, it benefits the global news reader with a richer understanding of the developing world.
“Our stories are reaching a global audience, even fighting gender and moral rules — that is the value of what we do.”
– Manori Wijesekera, regional editor in Global Press Asia, based in Sri Lanka
